BAYANIverse as Philosophy

CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTER PROPOSALS

The Pinoy Popular Culture as Philosophy Series aims to make philosophy more accessible to people through philosophizing about Filipino popular culture. This series stands on the belief that numerous works in Filipino popular culture are philosophical and, thus, are worthy of philosophical investigation. It follows the “AS philosophy” approach that treats popular culture as works of philosophy. In the “as philosophy” perspective, creators are “not only be inspired by philosophy, or use ideas they learned in philosophy class, but they can convey philosophical points, raise philosophical questions, and even make philosophical arguments … [thus] the works they produce can be philosophy, and as a result are worth philosophical examination” (Johnson, 2023, xiii).

The Pinoy Popular Culture as Philosophy Series seeks to make philosophy understandable, relatable, and enjoyable to Filipino readers. Thus, chapter contributions should be written in a way that can be engaged by both beginners and experts in philosophy; contributions must not be written as a research paper.

The third volume in the Series will focus on the BAYANIverse, a critically acclaimed film series directed by Jerrold Tarog. We invite chapter proposals from anyone who would like to explore the philosophical arguments and positions presented by the films Heneral Luna, Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral, and Quezon. Potential contributors are free to propose chapters that philosophically engage the BAYANIverse while reflective of the “AS philosophy” approach. Proposals may focus on overarching themes or issues, a specific film or character, and novel questions and perspectives, among others. We discourage merely relating the films with or discussing them in light of certain philosophical theories.

Sample titles and topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Bayan o Sarili, Pumili Ka: Should We Sacrifice Ourselves for our Country?
  • Goyo: The Role of the Youth in Democracy and Nation-building
  • Never Meet Your Heroes: Quezon and Reconsidering Hero Archetypes
  • Artikulo Uno: Exploring the Values of Discipline and Obedience
The Pinoy Popular Culture as Philosophy Series will be edited by Leander Penaso Marquez. He is a faculty member of the University of the Philippines - Diliman and has authored / co-authored several articles on pop culture and philosophy. His works have been included in the volumes The Palgrave Handbook of Popular Culture as Philosophy (published by Springer Nature) and Black Mirror and Philosophy: Dark Reflections (published by Wiley).
