Aletheia Publishing is proud to announce the release of the second title under its Aletheia Literary Series entitled Proclivities: Stories from Kidapawan by Karlo Galay David.
The book is a collection of short stories that explore the author's fascination with the peculiar manifestations of trauma and the complex psychology of the Modern Mindanao Settler condition:
A woman who inflicts the pain of Mindanao history on herself as a way of remembering – taking on a bizarre tradition of assuming the identity of someone who died over a century ago;
An artist who lives a precisely choreographed life to fight his insecurities and the ennui of his hometown;
A man who returns to Kidapawan after decades of being away to look for his lost dog;
A college professor who suddenly has to deal with the disruptive prospect of a relationship after living a life of routine and order;
A son of a rubber tapper from rural Kidapawan who finds himself in Singapore to let go of a childhood love;
A man who relieves his past traumas by listening to the music he has associated with them;
An aging philologist who is trying to decipher the journal of his mysterious ancestor;
A young man who teaches himself to draw sexual gratification from the sight of death as a response to severe bullying;
Drawing heavily from his hometown, author Karlo Galay David deftly captures the deterioration and recovery of characters who were rendered victims of their own histories. Each tale is brilliantly complemented by the hypnotic artwork of fellow Mindanawon artist Raffael David Westram, whose black and white illustrations playfully invite viewers to analyze them like psychometric inkblots.
The book is now available for Php599. You may order via this link:
About the Author:
Karlo Antonio Galay David hails from Kidapawan City, North Cotabato, where both
sides of his Mindanao Settler families have lived for five generations. He has
documented five previously unrecorded civilian massacres, the obscure lives of
many local historical figures, and the details of dozens of forgotten
historical incidents in his hometown, where he works as local historian and
culture and arts consultant for the City Government. On the side, he is also
involved with documenting the cuisine and oral traditions of the Obo Monuvu of
Kidapawan while teaching Creative Writing at Silliman University and dabbling
into art criticism. He has a Masters in Creative Writing from Silliman
University, and has won the Don Carlos Palanca and Nick Joaquin Literary
Awards. He has seen print in Mindanao, Cebu, Dumaguete, Manila, Hong Kong,
Bangkok, and Singapore. Proclivities is his
first book.
About the Artist:
Raffael David Westram (b.2000) nicknamed “West” is an emerging artist based in Davao, Philippines. He specializes in a multitude of mediums both digital and traditional, portraying his subjects in a blend of abstract and surrealistic art style. West paints with the intention of conveying a narrative; capturing fleeting and intangible feelings, and moments portraying his figures in a contemporary twist, blending subject and object suspended in time. Drawing influences from nature and the mixed cultural background in his home, mythology, fairytales, pop culture contemporary artists, and old masters, his art is in a constant state of development. West ambitions to be an integral part and contributor to the creative industry of Mindanao.
